Hikari means “light”.
Inspired by the Japanese story of Princess Kaguya, a girl of light who never quite felt she belonged. Many girls and women feel like outsiders, try to hold it all together on the outside, or carry fears they don’t know how to share. I get it. I’ve been there too.
Hikari Female Therapy, based in the Netherlands, offers a space to explore your light, rediscover it, and learn how to use it with support that’s real.
I’m a Counselling Psychologist (Psycholoog NIP®, SKJ) based in Haarlem, NL, and I don’t do blank-slate therapy. I show up as a real person, because real connection is where change begins. All the chaos, questions, and contradictions — bring it. This space holds it. I offer therapy in English and Afrikaans, and I also speak Dutch (B2 level) if that helps you feel more at home. Therapy can be challenging, but when it’s honest and caring, it can also be powerful and unexpectedly light.

Every so often, we run workshops, talks, and groups in Amsterdam or Haarlem, where you can connect with others figuring things out too. Because at Hikari, connection isn’t just an extra 'niceness' , it’s everything.

The teen years can be wild, but let’s be real, they can also bring self-doubt, mood swings, and, if you’re new here, a whole set of unspoken social rules. In our sessions, I’ll help you navigate it all — from school stress and friendships to family tension and feeling out of place.

One-on-one sessions offer you a private, supportive space where you can freely share what’s on your mind . No judgment, just honesty. Together, with care and curiosity, we’ll explore what’s holding you back and find a path toward meaningful, lasting growth.
20 Minute Free Consultation:
Step 1
Let’s connect for a free 20-minute chat. No pressure, just a chance to see if we’re a good fit and get your questions answered. When working with teens, I also invite parents for a free discovery call to explore your family’s needs.
Step 2
Legal Paperwork
Once you’re ready to get started, I’ll send over an informed consent form that explains the strict confidentiality I follow. It’s also a good time to check whether your insurance covers any of the costs.
Step 3
The Intake
Before we begin regular sessions, we’ll conduct a comprehensive assessment to help me understand your background and what’s holding you back. You can always skip anything that feels too personal — we’ll go at your pace. This helps us create an individualised treatment plan.
For teen clients, the intake includes time with both the teen and the parent(s).
step 4
The First Session
Our first session is all about getting to know you and understanding what’s brought you here. We’ll look at what’s happening now, and start to explore the bigger picture of how you got to this point. Feeling a bit nervous is completely normal, and I’ll do everything I can to help you feel at ease. We’ll also talk about your goals and decide together how often to meet.
"From the start, therapy with Marique felt comfortable and free of judgment. I was able to quickly trust and open up to her, and her approach truly changed my mindset — by learning to tell the difference between my thoughts and my actual feelings, I was able to understand myself in a new way and feel less anxious while navigating the challenges of starting life in a new country." - CM, 28
